Ancona Student Chapter Visits Barcelona Student Chapter for IONS Meeting
Written by Tamara Monti, UPM OSA SC Member

Is there a better way to attract undergraduate students to optical science than taking them to visit advanced scientific laboratories in a wonderful foreign city, guided by friendly local students?

After the last year’s field trip to Paris, the Università Politecnica delle Marche OSA SC (Italy) organized on May a visit to ICFO, the Institute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona (Spain). More than 20 among undergraduate and PhD students attended this exchange trip, guided by Prof. F. Simoni, the Ancona SC advisor.

Warmly and efficiently hosted by the local Student Chapter, the group visited research laboratories and facilities, where the students had the opportunity to enlarge their knowledge about latest topics in fundamental and applied optics.

The trip was also an occasion for five representatives of the Italian chapter to meet their Spanish counterparts within the IONS project. A workshop among the chapter leaders was organized to share ideas and experiences, to project future exchange initiatives and to strengthen personal and scientific relationships.

And after the sunset, the link between Ancona and Barcelona Student Chapters was cemented with a few carafes of delightful sangria!
