News From OSA

A Letter from KiKi

Recently I listened to an episode of the podcast, This American Life, which featured stories from people who had attended summer camps in their childhood. They talked about the importance camp had in their lives and how the experience had stayed with them throughout their lives.

In a lot of ways, the OSA Annual Meeting/ Frontiers in Optics (FiO) is like a summer camp. Old friends are able to meet up and relive past experiences and new friends are made. Of course there is more to FiO than making and seeing friends. The meeting features short courses, professional development opportunities, and the chance to hear about the latest advances in optics and photonics. But the memories made by shared drinks in the lobby bar and new friendships that span across countries are what many OSA members prize as some of the most important benefits from attending the meeting. Like a summer camp, people who reunite at the meeting often spend time remembering old jokes and old friends and these are the stories that make my job a lot of fun.

The challenge is finding ways to include better programming and enough opportunities for socializing each year so that everyone can make the most out of their time. This year, I’m looking forward to several special events for students and, of course, the OSA Student Member Reception, which is always a fun time for everyone. One of the events for students is a workshop sponsored by the OSA Foundation about goals, both making them and achieving them. It should be a very interesting and helpful event.

If you plan to attend FiO this year for the first time, be assertive in finding opportunities to meet others. These relationships may stay with you throughout your career!

See you in San Jose!
