News From OSA

Letter from the Chapter & Student Services Manager

There have been many changes since the last Focal Point was released.  Most of you already know that I recently returned from maternity leave after the birth of my daughter, Margaux Dare L’Italien, born on January 25th. I realize now that I’m looking at life through a different lens.

Like many of you, Margaux is fascinated by color and light, but I don’t think she’s ready for her thesis just yet. Before I left for work today, I waved my daughter’s favorite toy in front of her, watching as her face lit up with pleasure at the sight of the vibrant colored toy bug with little round flashing red lights for eyes.  I thought about her learning about rainbows and prisms in the years to come…maybe she will even hear about them from OSA members who have decided to do outreach through their chapters.

I would like to officially welcome all of the new chapters that were approved during my maternity leave!  Over the next couple of weeks I will call the presidents of these chapters personally to introduce myself and to answer any questions that may have arisen since the start-up of their groups.

Congratulations to the winners of the OSA/SPIE Joint Best Poster Contest at the NSBP/NSHP Meeting and to the Chapter and Section Activity and Educational Outreach Grant recipients. I look forward to seeing the positive effects that the individuals involved with these efforts will have on the future of optics and photonics and science in general. Also, congratulations to the recipients of the Incubic/Milton Chang Travel Award for CLEO!  I’m sure the feedback from their experiences attending the meeting will be a joy to hear about after they’ve returned home.

My return to OSA is an easy one thanks to my many OSA friends from all over the world who have kept in touch with me and to all of the support that my colleagues have shown in my absence.  I want to especially thank Allison Cargile, Emily Graffum, Tori Sanders and Chad Stark for all of the time and energy they put into maintaining and even improving many Chapter and Section-related programs while I was gone.

Please enjoy this issue of Focal Point and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best regards,
