Beijing University of Technology Student Chapter Update

An Ending and Beginning

On December 7th, 2007, the Beijing University of Technology OSA Student Chapter held a group meeting in the Optical Information Processing laboratory of our school. Three teachers and sixteen graduate students took part in this meeting. This marked the end of this year, and the beginning of the next year for the activities of our chapter.

Some of the members of our student chapter.

In the group meeting, Dr. Qiaofen Zhu (a new member of our chapter) who has published several papers of SCI, gave a report about photonic crystals. She explained the mechanism and the use of the photonic crystal in laser and optical information processing. Because this topic is a novel program for us, we asked a lot of questions, and she answered all of them for us. Then several master students in our group also gave reports on their own research, and we exchanged ideas about the experiments. Through this activity, we gained lots of knowledge.

Students listening to reports carefully.

After the meeting, the members of the OSA student chapter of the BJUT discussed the schedule for the next year. Our new president, Miss Jie Zhao, first summarized the activities from 2007. In the past year, we organized several activities, which increased the students’ interests on optics and made more and more students know OSA as well as its function in the optics field and the world. Then we discussed the plan for 2008, which is: communicating with other OSA student chapters in China, visiting companies focused on optics’ development and continue to publicize optics. We also decided to accept six more graduate students as new members of our chapter.

We hope that in the New Year, the student chapter of BJUT can become better and better.
