United States - Virginia : Norfolk State University Student Chapter of the Optical Society of America
The Norfolk State University Student Chapter of the Optical Society of America was founded March 7, 2003.
Officers of this chapter include: Founding President Starre Williams, Vice-President Ichesia Fowles, Treasurer Kai Zhang, and Secretary Jakub Novak. Dr. Mikhail A. Noginov is the chapter's faculty advisor.
The activities of the chapter are aimed at:
- Enhancement of awareness of the optical science and engineering among the academic and local communities
- Serving as a means of communication and interaction between students, faculty, and administrations
- Establishing interaction between student and local sections and national headquarters of the Optical Society of America, and
- Broadening the student's insight of post-graduate opportunities.
The Norfolk State University Student Chapter of the OSA will promote the goals of the Optical Society of America and prepare students for the leadership positions in the field of optics and other areas of hi-technology.
Chapter Highlights
- Membership drives (members joined OSA during the 2004-2005academic year)
- The Chapter had its annual "Show Your love" Fundraiser.
- Chapter members presented at the 3rd Annual OSA Student Members Seminar at the Center for Materials Research

(3) On April 22, 2005, the chapter had the second annual competition of student presentations in optics, photonics, and relevant fields, "Optics is Light Work". There were 16 poster presentations and five judges. The judges were Dr. Vladimir Gavrilenko, Dr. Arlene Maclin, Dr. Aswini Pradhan, Dr. Rakim Rakimov, and Dr. Vladimir Shalaev. The OSA Student Chapter sponsored four monetary prizes: Graduate Students: 1st place - $75, 2nd place - $50; Undergraduate Students: 1st place - $75, 2nd place - $50. The first and second place winners for Graduate and Undergraduate students in the category of Optics were Cephas Small, Jacob Dadson, Kevin Reynolds, and Starre Williams respectively. Monica Mathis was awarded $75, which was sponsored by Science and Technology Academicians on the Road to Success (STARS), for the first place prize in the General Science category for Undergraduate Students. All of the participants received certificates. This event was followed by a seminar given by Dr. Vladimir Shalaev.
