Joint Meeting of the Optical Society of Southern California (OSSC) and the UC Irvine Student Chapter of the Optical Society of America (OSA)
Wednesday Nov. 8, 2006
6:00 to 10:00 pm
FOTOISC (pronounced photo-isc) has formed to provide both an informal and formal path for people interested in helping out and having fun. http://oisc.net/Friends.htm
The FOTOISC would like to invite you to attend a Joint Meeting of the Optical Society of Southern California (OSSC) and the UC Irvine Student Chapter of the Optical Society of America (OSA) on Wed. Nov. 8 from 6 pm to 10 pm. This meeting will include overviews of a number of ongoing interdisciplinary laser based spectroscopy programs followed by tours of the laboratories with presentations in each. More details of this meeting can be found on-line at www.OSSC.org.
The OISC is proud to announce a new informal relationship with the Beall Center for Art and Technology at UC Irvine's Claire Trevor School of the Arts. Open to the public (admission is free), the Beall Center supports research and exhibitions that explore new relationships between the arts, sciences and engineering. Currently, they are exhibiting, " Quantizing Effects: The Liminal Art of Jim Campbell" that uses digital lighting effects to express waves and wave motion, resolutions, focus and other related visual and optical phenomenon. A fine time to visit this exhibit would be before the OSSC / UCI OSA meeting. Also, OISC Director, Donn Silberman, will be doing Optricks presentations as part of the exhibit's Family Day on the last day of the exhibit on Sun. Dec. 3 from 11 am to 3 pm.
Our first Fundamental Optics and Introductory to Fiber Optics Classes are now more than half way complete at the CACT facility and we are planning some new classes starting in Jan. 2007. They will include:
- Optical Interferometry
- Introduction to Lasers
- Optics Fabrication (this will be followed by more advanced optics fab classes in the summer and fall)
- Optical Lens Design (this will be followed by optical systems design and optomechanical design classes in the summer and fall)
More information on these exciting new classes is available on the web at www.irvinecact.com.
FOTOISC is having informal fun meetings at the Classic Q Billiards and Sports Club in Newport Beach near the John Wayne Airport on the first Thursday of each month after work from around 6 pm to 8 pm. Come join us for some billiards, food, drink and fun.
We hope to see you at one of our monthly FOTOISC meetings at the Classic Q and at other OISC actitivies. You are always welcme to stop by any of our classes (http://oisc.net/classes.htm) at our new facility (http://oisc.net/contactinfo.htm) and see what is going on.
If you do plan on attending this month's meeting, please take a moment to reply to this e-mail and let me know ....or just send a quick note to say 'Hi' and wish us well as we begin to grow to the next level!
