2006 FiO Student Events:

Student Chapter Leadership Meeting - Sunday, October 8th 2006

Leaders from each OSA Student Chapter are invited to attend this lively, one-day meeting, where they will come together to share ideas, brainstorm, and learn about effective strategies to manage their chapters. This leadership meeting will be better than ever before and will have a special segment focusing on educational outreach. All Student Chapter Leaders are encouraged to attend! Student Welcome Reception - Monday, October 9th 2006

Students come together for this popular evening event! Relax and meet fellow students from around the world at the Student Welcome Reception. Network with your peers and take a break from the sessions! Free food and beverages will be served!

Symposium on Undergraduate Research - Monday, October 9th 2006

This 6th annual DLS symposium is rapidly becoming one of the most successful DLS traditions. During the past three years the number of undergraduates presenting papers has grown from under 20 to more than 30. The talks are of outstanding quality and generate a great deal of lively interest and on-the-spot discussion. This year's Symposium will consist of afternoon poster and oral sessions. Come see your peers present their work.

Building Your Future in Optics: "A Ph.D. is Not Enough!: A Guide to Survival in Science" - Tuesday, October 10th 2006

We welcome students to this special student session series featuring Dr. Peter J. Feibelman, Sandia National Laboratories, author of "A Ph.D. is Not Enough!: A Guide to Survival in Science". Learn from an expert and receive firsthand advice on how you can effectively build your future in optics.  Feibelman will explore the dimensions of the two key issues: What are your interests and capabilities, and what does your audience expect from you? He will focus on ways to establish a scientific identity and generally to persuade the research community it wants you as a permanent member.
