A Message from OSA's Chapter and Student Services Specialist

Dear Student Chapter Leaders,

It has been an amazing year! There is so much happening with Activity Grants and Student Chapter Leader Conference Calls that we have slipped into the second quarter of the year almost without notice. With that in mind, I'd like to share some exciting news with you.

To begin with, I would like to invite each of you to attend the annual one-day Student Chapter Leadership Meeting this October. If you haven't yet attended one of these meetings, you should make it a point to try to make it to this one!

At this meeting, you will have the opportunity to receive an educational outreach kit for your chapter and learn how you can use it, meet student leaders from other chapters, learn about their chapter activities, discuss chapter issues, brainstorm new ideas and have fun!

The Student Chapter Leadership Meeting will be held on Sunday, October 8 in Rochester , NY in conjunction with Frontiers in Optics, the OSA Annual Meeting. All Student Chapter Leaders are welcome to attend. OSA will reimburse one Student Leader's travel expenses (airfare, meals and hotel stay) from Saturday, October 7 through Tuesday, October 10 (3 nights and 4 days). After Tuesday, October 10, the student will be responsible for their own housing and meal expenses. You may choose any one student from your Chapter to be reimbursed. If you choose to stay for the Annual Meeting, OSA will also waive your Annual Meeting Registration Fee. International students should already be thinking about their visas for this meeting.

We have just held our second Student Chapter Leader Conference Call and it was another great success. If you are an officer and haven't been receiving the notices or minutes for these calls, please let me know. The calls bring together chapter officers from all over the world to discuss projects and questions allowing for real time communication to take place between OSA headquarters and student chapter representatives.

The most recent call centered on a multi-chapter project that should help all student chapter officers that the Southampton and Duke Student Chapters created. The Southampton article in this issue of Focal Point discusses their idea in greater detail. I have been encouraged and thrilled with the results of these conference calls and I look forward to more to come.

As always, if you have an idea that you'd like to share regarding student chapters or student benefits, please let me know. We never know what we can achieve if we never ask the necessary questions!

Best Regards,
