Meet the New Student Chapters of 2005!
University College Dublin OSA Student Chapter

Location of Chapter: Dublin , Ireland
Month Chapter was approved by OSA: April 05
Number of members: 9
Chapter activities this year, if any: The inaugural society event was held in September 05 to Skirmish paintballing. We are hosting an invited speaker in December from Clemson University of South Carolina
Chapter goals for 2006: At the moment we are developing an outreach program for the chapter to encourage interest in optical sciences. We have two illustrious invited speakers lined up for early next year. Hope to have a chapter website running by the end of February promoting the groups activities. We aim to increase the groups presence at and participation in OSA events such as FIO. We look forward to hosting a variety of both social and academic events with UCD's SPIE chapter

Università Politecnica delle Marche Student Chapter of the
Optical Society of America

- Formal Foundation of the chapter with the Università Politecnica delle Marche Headmaster.
- Presentation of the chapter during lessons of optics, physics and electronics.
- Advertising and recruiting promotion with open labs days.
Chapter goals for 2006:
- First Italian Workshop for students, Phds and young researchers in optics and photonics.
- Optics and Photonics promotion days at the Università Politecnica delle Marche .
- Trip to the Institute of Optics of Paris - France

Optical Society of America Student Chapter of the University of Notre Dame

Location of Chapter: Notre Dame, Indiana

Chapter activities this year, if any:
- Recruited another 5 new members
- 5 student seminars
- 7 monthly chapter meetings
- South Bend local high school outreach program (collaborated with SPIE student chapter at Notre Dame)
- High School Outreach Program Competition in Great Lake SPIE Chapter, 2nd place prize ( Kent State University , OH )
- Co-sponsored 1 invited talk from Dr. Caulfield.

Latvian Student Chapter of the Optical Society of America

Chapter activities this year, if any:
- 14 th June. Harold J. Metcalf from USA gathered Latvian students in University of Latvia to suggest to make an OSA Student chapter. Temporal officers were elected in this meeting.
- 6 th October. First regular meeting. Aigars Atvars presented what OSA is. Then discussions about our interests in this chapter.
- 3rd November: Lecture "Search for Dark Matter by atomic physics methods" told by new researcher Dr. Frorian Gahbauer.
- 1st December. Lecture "Dye lasers" told by bachelor student Peteris Spels.
Chapter goals for 2006:
- To be accepted in OSA as student chapter.
- Have regular meetings- lectures once in a month.
- Together with SPIE Latvian student chapter ( http://www.spie.times.lv/ ) to organize a student conference.
- Make a chapter web page.

V. Karazin Kharkiv National University OSA Student Chapter
Location of Chapter: Kharkiv , Ukraine
Month Chapter was approved by OSA: KNU OSA Student Chapter was organized in November 2005 and is in process of being approved by OSA MES Council
Number of members: 8 - All of them are graduate students at the School of Radiophysics at V. Karazin Kharkiv National University .
Chapter activities this year, if any: N/A
Chapter goals for 2006: We have defined our goals and have several activities planned for the next year, including:
- Creating the Chapter's web-site
- Organizing an optic effects photo-contest for high school students
- Giving a number of public lectures for high school students and their teachers of Kharkiv region to awaken their interest to science and study
We also plan to organize a series of research and career development seminars for the Chapter members and general public.
We hope that these activities will increase the number of the Chapter members by the end of the year, will enhance future careers of the Chapter members, make educational and information resources of OSA accessible to the KNU students, and will help to better educate the public about science in general and optics in particular.

ICFO-OSA Student Chapter

Location of Chapter: Barcelona , Spain

Chapter activities this year (2005):
1.) ICFO-OSA Student Chapter Seminars 2005
Summary: All the members were invited to give presentations related to their own field of research activity. Thus, every month we have 2 such seminars among our chapter members. Invitation is send to non-members as well.
2.) Meeting with Professor Emil Wolf at ICFO
Summary: When Professor Emil Wolf visited Barcelona , ICFO-OSA Student Chapter took the lead in welcoming him at ICFO. The students had a long informal chat with him in Optics as well as other fields.
3.) Publicity campaign 2005
Summary: ICFO-OSA Student Chapter members took part in a campaign to get our chapter known to all the University students. We also talked about the importance of Optics in day to day life as well as its importance in the present industrial scenario. The management of our institute was impressed with our campaign and presented us with a funding of 500 USD.
4.) Recruitment drive 2005 for student chapter
Summary : ICFO-OSA Student Chapter members took part in a recruitment drive, among the Ph.D. students at ICFO, to explain the goals of our chapter and the advantages associated in being a member of our chapter. This resulted in 7 new members agreeing to join us in the coming year. Some Postdocs were also interested in the activities of the chapter and we happily placed them in our Board of Advisors.

Chapter goals for 2006:
- Organization of the 1º School on Optics and Photonics . This school will be held at IFSC-USP, and the target public is graduate students and undergraduate students, not only from our university but also from other locations of Brazil . The school will have 5 hot topics related to the area of Optics and photonics, which will be given by professors of several universities.
- Organization of the event "Optics in the school". The target audience of this activity includes high school students of schools that do not have a large budget, and therefore, have no teaching laboratory of Physics. Within this activity we will be carrying out optics experiments aiming to seed on them scientific spirit.
